The first step to becoming certified is usually to complete a course in bookkeeping. There are many different courses out there, at a number of different training institutions. Some are offered at local training organizations, some are offered as a distance learning program and some can be done via an online course. The length of the course can also be tailored for different participants. Some people like to study full time and get the study out of the way. Others like to fit study in with their work and do it over a period of time.

All of the training courses you will take on the way to being a certified bookkeeper will cover some similar concepts. You will learn about the laws of accounting, the so called accounting principles. You will the difference between income and assets, liabilities, capital and expenses. Financial reporting, which is the output of bookkeeping transactions will be covered, and will give you the understanding of how your information is used in practice. Other areas will be covered to give you a good understanding of legal and tax concepts for example.
The next step along the way is to undertake practical experience. The period required will vary, but can be from one to three years.

Often this process is done with the help of a mentor. Your mentor will be able to help answers queries you have and they will make sure you complete all the areas required. This is done to ensure you have a broad practical understanding before you are qualified as a bookkeeper.

The final step is to pass a final exam. The exam will test everything you have learnt along the way.  Again the length and the content of the exam may vary from location to location.  Once this has been done you will be qualified as a certified bookkeeper, and will be able to call yourself such.
